Anchor Your Children in the Word of God, Parents Urged
By Bro. Erie Tamale
In his sermon on this year’s Adventurers and Eager Beavers day at Westmount Church, which was held the Sabbath of November 18, Pastor Hopeton Cousins urged parents to anchor their children in the understanding of the word of God. “You must ground your children in the teachings of the bible and give them proper spiritual guidance if they are to be able to withstand the pressures and temptations of this modern day society", he said.
The theme for the day was, “The Anchor Holds”. Quoting from Hebrews 6, Pastor Cousins urged church members to have their souls anchored in heaven where Jesus Christ has entered as a forerunner for us. It is our only hope, a hope that is both sure and steadfast. We should help our children read and fully understand what Christ taught us and urge them to follow His footsteps.
Adventurer and Eager Beaver clubs are part of the worldwide program of the Seventh-day Adventist Church which caters for young people between the ages of 4 and 9. The mission of the clubs is to nurture children to gain a positive attitude and undertanding of the benefits, joy and responsibilities of living a Christian life. Through different activities, children establish a relationship with God, learn new skills and appropriate behavior and have fun together. “I strongly encourage parents who have not yet done so to register their children with the clubs”, said Sis. Hilary Blake, the Eager Beaver Coordinator. “The benefits for your Children are invaluable. It is an investment you will never regret”, she said.
The Adventurer Club also exists for the purpose of supporting parents in their task of raising children for Jesus Christ. It does not seek to take over this responsibility from the parents but rather to complement their efforts. “We parents must play our part in ensuring the spiritual upbringing and anchoring of our children”, said Sis. Sarah Baptiste, the Adventurer Club Director. “We should create a good atmosphere, both at home and at church, that would make children comfortable to talk to us and share their feelings freely in a friendly Christian environment”, she said. Moreover, we should all work together, with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to guide and help our children to love God, as their Personal Saviour and to follow Him all the way.
The day was truly a blessing not only for the children but also for all the church members who were present. At the end of the service, in which more than 19 eager beavers and adventurers lead out in the worship service, one church member remarked: “this was not just a day of emphasis for the little ones but also an opportunity for us the parents and church members to reflect on the divine responsibility that the Lord has bestowed on us to take care of the little flock.”
